What Is a Root Canal?

In this video, Dr. Chris Powell explains root canals as a procedure to treat tooth infections with minimal discomfort thanks to a modern numbing agent called Septocaine.

Patients often ask about root canals and whether they are painful. A root canal is a necessary procedure when a tooth becomes infected due to decay or is damaged by a break. The procedure involves accessing the center of the tooth, where the infection is located, and thoroughly disinfecting this area. While the roots of the tooth remain intact, the inside is cleaned and sealed, no longer hollow.

Typically, after a root canal, a crown is placed over the tooth. This is to ensure that the tooth is protected and restored to its full strength. It’s important not to be apprehensive about getting a root canal. It is a straightforward procedure that usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Most patients find that the discomfort associated with a root canal is minimal, especially compared to the pain of the infection itself.
