6 Reasons You Might Need a Dental Crown

A dental crown is often used to save a damaged or broken tooth. This cap can restore the tooth’s appearance, prevent infections, and slow or stop the progression of decay. Since the crown is meant to restore your tooth, it is crafted from incredibly strong material. Your dentist can create a dental crown that’s shaped perfectly!

The inside of the dental crown is hollow, allowing it to be slid over the tooth. Then it cements into place. But the outside looks exactly the same as a tooth.

Crowns are one of the most common procedures in dental work. There are many reasons that you might need one. Here are just a few.

1. Your tooth is damaged.

When most people think about dental crowns, this is what they picture: You broke your tooth biting down on a piece of hard candy. Or maybe you split your tooth when you took a hard fall playing sports. Or maybe you had some other accidental mishap.

The end result is the same. Your tooth is damaged, and you’re no longer able to bite down the same way. Not only that, but the tooth also feels like it’s breaking in your mouth. Chewing can be very painful.

This is one of the most common reasons to get a dental crown. Indeed, a crown is often the go-to dental procedure. By capping the tooth, your dentist is keeping it from becoming more damaged as you chew and floss.

2. You have a very decayed tooth.

Sometimes cavities get larger without us even realizing it. Many cavities occur in places they can’t be seen or felt. You might not realize that your tooth is decaying until you go to the dentist.

That’s part of why six-month checkups are important. But if it’s been a while since you had a regular dental cleaning, you could be dealing with some decay.

In most cases of cavities, your dentist will just put a filling in. But if the decay is advanced enough, a dental crown might be a better option. This will keep further decay from happening. Your dentist may also opt to do both a filling and a crown for stabilization.

3. There’s a crack in your tooth.

Maybe your tooth hasn’t broken dramatically down the middle. There’s just a little fissure. That’s fine, right?

Wrong! If you don’t take care of a crack, it can deepen and split the tooth. You might lose the entire tooth.

Your dentist will trim your tooth to below the crack. That way, the fissure can’t spread. Then they’ll put a crown over the top to help retain the shape of your bite.

4. You have a misshapen tooth.

Braces aren’t the only tools that can improve your smile! There are tons of cosmetic dentistry tools that can help to brighten, whiten, and straighten your teeth.

Maybe you have an oddly-shaped or chipped tooth that makes you self-conscious. Your dentist can shape your teeth and cover them with crowns. It’s a lot easier than wearing braces, although it can be a little pricey. The cost really depends on how many teeth you want done.

5. You’re recovering from a root canal.

During a root canal, the nerve root of your tooth will be removed. The tooth is then vulnerable. It could wear down much more easily or decay without your knowledge.

For this reason, many dentists recommend having a crown put on at the end of the root canal procedure. You’ll first get a temporary crown, and then you’ll come back a few weeks later to get the permanent one.

Not only does this help to preserve your tooth, but it also makes the recovery process easier. You’ll be a lot more comfortable with a familiar bite and a protective cap!

6. You’ve gotten a dental implant.

Crowns are typically used as the last step in the dental implant process. Your doctor will place the dental crown over the implant to help restore your bite.  With our years of expertise and state-of-the-art equipment, our crowns will enhance your smile by improving its appearance and function. Also, you will be sure to love the outcome, as this up-to-date procedure produces a result that is more durable and lifelike than ever.
