What Is the Process for Getting a Dental Crown?
In this video, Dr. Chris Powell explains the process of getting a dental crown, from tooth preparation and temporary crown placement to fitting the permanent crown.
People frequently ask about the process involved in getting a dental crown. Here’s a detailed overview of what you can expect:
First Appointment: During your initial visit, we focus on preparing the tooth for the crown. This involves numbing the area to ensure comfort, then carefully reshaping the tooth by reducing its size to make space for the crown. After reshaping, we build the tooth structure back up if necessary to support the crown. Next, we place a cord around the tooth to help define the area for an accurate impression. We then use a digital scanner to take a precise image of your tooth, which is sent to a dental lab where your custom crown will be crafted.
Temporary Crown: After the scanning, a temporary crown made of plastic is placed. This serves as a placeholder to protect the tooth and maintain the space in your mouth while the permanent, ceramic crown is being made. The temporary crown also ensures that you can continue to eat and speak comfortably.
Second Appointment: Once your ceramic crown is ready, you return for your second visit. During this appointment, the temporary crown is removed. We then carefully fit and securely bond the permanent crown to your tooth. This visit is crucial for ensuring that the crown fits seamlessly into your bite and matches the color and shape of your surrounding teeth.
The entire process is efficient and typically spans two appointments, with each visit lasting about an hour or two. The result is a restored tooth that looks, feels, and functions like natural, enhancing both the strength and aesthetics of your smile.
